Insurance & Benefits
Before turning 18 years old, it is important to check your current plan to determine at what age your child’s coverage will end. You should apply for adult health insurance before your child’s coverage ends. In addition, there are many other benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and other benefits through the state’s Developmental Disability Support Services (DDDS) that must be secured before leaving school or turning 18. Beware of timelines to ensure that you do not lose the services and supports that you need.
You also may need to consider certain legal issues as your child turns 18. Click HERE to watch a video addressing health care power of attorney, health surrogacy laws and legal guardianship, estate and long-term planning, and special needs trusts.
